Just in time for Thanksgiving holiday gatherings, genealogical reference book publisher Burke's Peerage & Gentry of England has created a new Web site to make it easier for American families to trace their British, Scottish and Irish roots.
The new Burke's Peerage & Gentry American Families of British Descent database site was announced today. It provides detailed information about 1,600 families with royal ties or whose ancestors emigrated to North America.
Most of the lineages begin in the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries and chart family ancestry on both sides of the Atlantic, according to Burke's. The records typically contain details about various generations, information about the origins of families in Britain and the achievements and positions held by individuals down through the centuries.
Before the new American site was created, Americans searching for their British roots had to use Burke's global database to learn more about their families, a process that took longer and was more complex, said Peter Camilleri, managing director of Thomas Technology Solutions (UK) Ltd. in London, the systems integrator that developed the site.

Burke's main Web site was launched in August 2001, after the company was purchased from a previous owner that had not developed an online presence for the materials.
Peg Marshall, director of marketing for Thomas Technology Solutions Inc. at its world headquarters in Horsham, Pa., said her company worked with Burke's to take all of the original paper documents and enter them into the site's searchable Microsoft SQL Server database manually and with scanning equipment.
The company also developed a custom e-commerce module so that users can buy subscriptions online to do their research directly at the Burke's Peerage & Gentry Web site. Basic research is free, but a full 24-hour subscription with detailed reports costs $25, and a one-year license costs $99.
'This is a method for the American people to know more about their ancestry,' Marshall said.
The Burke's Peerage & Gentry Web site includes 3.5 million pages of records for genealogical research. The complete database so far includes more than 1 million names within more than 7,000 genealogies, some of which date back to the 8th and 9th centuries.

Burke's Peerage was first published in book form in 1826 as Burke's Peerage & Baronetage. The Burke family also published a separate volume that same year, titled Burke's Landed Gentry. The rights to those books are now owned by Burke's Peerage & Gentry, which brought both titles under one name.
